We've talked about this idea of bittersweet—that when someone hurts us or wrongs us, sometimes it feels really sweet to hold onto the bitterness against them.
But actually, the sweetest thing is to let go of the bitterness! Of course, this is easier said than done—even with ourselves!
When we are let down or hurt, either by someone else or ourselves, we have a tendency to react in a couple of different ways; we get frustrated, we get angry, we get distant, and/or we get even.
Because of the unfairness or the hurt, a relationship with a person is broken, damaged, and not right in some way. And everything we do is in reaction to that.
In a lot of ways, our reaction feels justified, because they were wrong to do what they did, and we are right to be as upset as we are.
In situations like this, the idea of forgiveness seems weak and irresponsible and completely unfair. It can feel like a cop out!
